SAFER
COMPUTING FROM THE BLACK WIDOW AGENCY
- Always keep Microsoft Windows up to
date.
Open Internet Explorer
and click on Tools - Windows Updates. Download and install any
available updates or patches. These files specifically address
identified security vulnerabilities. Set your computer up to receive
automatic updates.
- Install a quality Virus Program.
Here at the Black Widow
Agency, we recommend Symantec Norton
Anti-Virus or McAfee Anti-Virus.
Install a program that will automatically download updates so you know
you have the latest and greatest program.
- Install a legitimate Spyware
Removal program. The Black
Widows recommend both AdAware and SpyBot Search and Destroy,
both of which are FREE. Update the files frequently and run the spybot
programs at least weekly.
- Never, ever click on an embedded
link within an e-mail
unless you absolutely know the source. Ignore e-mails that appear to be
from your bank, credit card company or on-line auction that contain
warnings like "Security Alert" or "Account Suspended." These are almost
always "phishing" attempts, or attempts to capture your username and
password for illegal purposes. No legitimate bank or credit card
company or on-line auction house will send you these types of messages.
